Htc touch phone does it cost extra to check email with wifi..no data plan?

i have the student txt plan with mts..just wondering if i can go check my email or whatever without it costing extra...data does not come with my plan....i want to send some pictures i took to my email cause it wont come up when i try connecting it through usb to the computer...but im too scared to really try it just in case..:( any advice? thanks!
